Syria- Grim Living Conditions Coerce Women to Scavenge through Landfill Rubbish

In light of the appalling living conditions sweeping the displacement camps in Ar Raqqa, refugees were coerced into scavenging through landfills waste for useful material to make a living. At least 50 families from the countryside of Ar Raqqah, Homs, and Deir ez-Zor endure disastrous economic conditions. With no breadwinners, women and kids were obliged to search the landfills for plastic cans, aluminum, and other metals to sell them. Collected items are sent to recycling plants. Waste pickers make no more than 5 thousand Syrian Pounds which equals one dollar and a half
