African migrants risk their lives traveling to Yemen despite the country’s war. More than 16,000 African migrants arrived in Yemen during the first nine months of this year, whereas Yemen “remains a major transit point along the eastern migration route, according to the Office of the International Organization for Migration in Yemen. Human rights activists state that Yemen has been filled with African Oromo immigrants in particular and from Somalia, expressing their surprise at the continuation of this amid the war and difficult conditions that Yemen is going through as well as the deteriorating economic situation and deprivation of all services like electricity, water, and infrastructure. Some African migrants arrive in Aden by sea then head to the southern governorates on foot. Many residents voiced their concerns about the increase in the number of immigrants and its impact on the health status of local communities, fearing the introduction of some alien diseases to the region.
