High prices and weak purchasing power in Yemen have led merchants and owners of food centers to divide food supplies such as flour, rice and sugar, from large bags to small rations, so that they can sell to customers according to what they can afford. An owner of a food store in Aden says that “many Customers used to buy sugar, for example, with weights of 15 kg and 20 kg, but with the rise in prices and difficult living conditions, they are buying sugar in kilos now”. 58% of the population of Yemen lives in extreme poverty compared to 19% before the outbreak of the war according to the World Bank, 24 million people in the country need humanitarian aid. With declining purchasing power and rising prices, many Yemenis face major challenges in getting food and health care.
