Iraq: Minefields in East Wasit Governorate Pose a Threat to People’ lives and Deny them from Having Picnics.
More than 5 thousands of Wasit governorate residents were victims of landmines that were planted in the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88), according to the head of the environment office-Saba Falih. He referred that the 132- kilometre borderline between Wasit governorate and Iran is packed with various types of landmines and Napalm bombs. The head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Wasit Governorate, Jawad Al-Shammari illustrated that even after 30 years of the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88), many cities such as Basrah, Amarah, Al-Kūt, Diyala, Sulaymaniyah are still among the most inflicted by the fallouts of this war. Al-Shammari pointed out that they possess maps of minefields. However, statistics confirm that there are at least 3 million unexploded ordnance and landmines. Governmental entities and organizations sought to minimize their threat by laying warning signs and by isolating these areas by barbed wires from farms, rangelands.
