Iraq – Iraqis protest in Tahrir Square against the devaluation of Iraqi dinar
Baghdad-Iraq 21/12/2020
Amid tight security measures, people gathered in Tahrir Square in Baghdad, Iraq, following activists calling for a peaceful rally protesting the government’s intention to increase the prices of commodities as the Central Bank of Iraq agreed to adjust the Foreign exchange rate. The protestors opposed the devaluation of the Iraqi dinar, insisting that the government not compel the bank to float the currency and reduce the employees’ wages and entitlements. To compensate for the fall in oil revenues induced by the deterioration of oil markets, the Central Bank had previously announced its decision to higher the sale price of the dollar to banks and exchange houses to 1460 dinars, from 1182 dinars per dollar.
