Iraq- Demonstrators Call for an Independent Election under UN Supervision

Baghdad- Iraq 02/10/2020

In conjunction with the commemoration of the first anniversary of the October 2019 uprising in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, demonstrators demanded the Iraqi government to change the country’s election law and to conduct fair parliamentary elections and adopt an independent election commission under UN supervision away from the pressure of armed militias. They also rejected closed constituency and demand the adoption of multiple ones. Demonstrators indicated that the previous elections burdened the Iraqi people and delayed the country’s economic, political, and social progress.
