After escaping the ISIS-held areas east of the Euphrates, a number of foreign individuals who recently surrendered to the SDF and the People’s Protection Units spoke about how they joined ISIS and how they were mistreated during that time, especially women, where some of them recounted the horrors they encountered under the rule of the so-called Islamic Caliphate. They also described the heinous acts of psychological and physical abuse they were exposed to after they joined ISIS and married members of the organization. Some of the surrendered men and women explained why they chose to join the organization, and how they had been misled to believe that ISIS is a true Islamic state before they arrived in the ISIS-held areas, where they found out the truth about this state. They also narrated stories about being imprisoned and prohibited from traveling after their arrival.
