Thailand – Chiang Mai…The most polluted city in the world

Forest fires resulted in air pollution in 9 districts as the air quality has dropped to a level that is harmful to citizens health. Northern cities such as Chiang Mai have topped the list of most polluted cities in the world as Chiang Mai was listed during previous weeks as the most polluted city in the world. Citizens were advised to remain indoors, especially pregnant women, children and the elderly. In addition to that, many tourists and residents left the city and moved to other regions in south Thailand. The fog has been a seasonal problem for over a decade, it normally starts in January and lasts until April as conditions of severe drought increase the chances of forest fires. In order to mitigate pollution, the government imposed a high fine on farmers who light fires to burn trash for the purpose of preparing the land for next harvest season.
