Iraq – Analysts: Abdul-Mahdi intends to dispose of the “National Balance” law in the military establishment

Analysts believe that PM Adel Abdul Mahdi intends to make a few alterations on the Defense Ministry’s military leaders, and that he is planning to dismiss the “National Balance” law, which has been in force since 2003. The Iraqi Constitution emphasized the need to take into consideration the balance between the Iraqi society’s denominations when jobs are assigned, to ensure there is no discrimination or marginalization, especially when it comes to the armed forces and security institutions. This law disqualified many proficient officers only because they do not belong to a specific party. Analysts also described this step as a major contributing factor in making adjustments in the areas where terrorist acts are still practiced, especially in Salahuddin and the western provinces of Iraq
