Storyline:
Dozens of Iraqi protesters gathered on Tuesday, in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad, to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of October Revolution, amid heavy security measures, as several main roads leading to the square were closed.
The protesters raised Iraqi flags, pictures of people killed in October Revolution, and banners demanding the dismissal of political authority, as well as holding the corrupt and killers of peaceful protesters accountable.
The public protests (October Revolution) took place in October 2019, in Baghdad and across governorates in central and southern Iraq, against deteriorating economic and political conditions, financial and administrative corruption and unemployment.
Shotlist:
– Soundbite (Ahmed – Protester):
“People went out to Tahrir Square and the squares of all revolting governorates, in central and southern Iraq, to reiterate demands of October Revolution, in which about 800 youth were killed, and thousands were wounded. Today we witnessed how security forces mistreated protesters, they banned raising pictures of those killed in the revolution, Iraqi flags and banners of our demands, they even banned selling water at the square.”
– Soundbite (Nabil – Protester):
“We are here to fight for Iraq, we want to get rid of the corrupt and politicized judiciary, which does nothing to hold criminals and murderers accountable. We carried out a massive revolution of the public 3 years ago, but we 800 youth were killed and the government met none of our demands. We are participating in this protest as individuals, we are not affiliated with any party, we are the citizens of Iraq.”
