Storyline

The city of Aden suffers from a severe shortage of domestic gas cylinders, forcing citizens to face heavy crowds in front of domestic gas suppliers. For about two months, citizens have been complaining about the scarcity of domestic gas and have to stand in long lines to be informed that the supply has run out. Aden’s daily need for gas cylinders is 20 thousand, but the share allocated to the city from the Marib refinery is only 8-10 thousand cylinders, which makes a 50 percent shortage from its normal need. The Aden Refinery, the main supplier of gas to the city and neighboring governorates, stopped working after Houthi militias destroyed the place in 2015.

  • (SOUNDBITE) Makram Nader – Citizen:

“People wait for a long time in queues to get domestic gas. They have 300 gas cylinders. We call on the government to provide us with gas. Aden is not liberated. These people are waiting since yesterday. It is shameful.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Mohamed Ahmed – Citizen:

“We came to get the gas. It used to be available in the shops. Now women and men are in queues to wait for gas. We used to buy a gas cylinder for 2000 Yemeni riyals, now it costs 5600 Yemeni riyals. We wait for a long time but get nothing”
