The extraordinary 15th meeting of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization has concluded in Baghdad, after hosting women ministerial figures from several Arab countries in addition to regional and international organizations for two days.

The meeting raised issues affecting women in the Arab world such as sexual harassment, societal and family violence, and the challenges occur due to the repercussions of wars and conflicts.

The meeting aims to address these issues through the enactment of laws and the exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as empower women politically, economically and socially to achieve equality with men.

“We are in the extraordinary fifteenth meeting of the Arab Women Organization held in Baghdad. These meetings are important for Arab women for political, economic and social empowerment. We represent all Arab countries. These meetings help us exchange experiences, organize annual work strategy for women, and list the gains for Arab women in all regions, especially that we are going through conflicts and wars that have affected Arab women.”

(SOUNDBITE) Wafa Al-Diq Hamza – Member of the Executive Council of the Arab Women Organization and former Minister in Lebanon:

“Women suffer from violence, harassment, and other fundamental issues affecting them in our Arab society. Access to decision-making positions and participation in authority is also at the organization’s concerns. Arab women have made important achievements and basic gains in their rights, but there are legal loopholes. We always have to look forward and achieve equality.”

(SOUNDBITE) Dr. Maryam Ali Ahmed – Director of Legislation and Laws Department at the Ministry of Development in Sudan:

“Women suffer due to the conflicts and war and such meetings are important for discussing the important issues for the member states of the Arab Women Organization. The Arab Women Organization is affiliated to the League of Arab States, and was established in 2000. Sudan ratified the establishment of the organization 2003. This meeting discusses ideas the problems and the challenges facing Arab women.”
