Storyline

Maher Abu Al-Jari restaurant, located in the old area in Baghdad near Tigris, is well-known for serving the traditional dish of fried Catfish, a famous Iraqi food cuisine. The 20-year-old restaurant is a small place, but it is usually crowded, due to the outstanding taste of the served catfish.  The catfish is known for possessing only spines with no in comparison to other river fish.

• Once you take a bite of the fried catfish, you will notice how it differs from other river fish, given the fact that it is almost boneless, possessing only a spine. Moreover, we use no spices or vinegar in our recipe, only salt. The species of catfish vary according to their habitat. We sometimes receive fresh catfish from Kūt, Samawah, Najaf, and Basra

I have been a fishmonger for 7 years. Cutting and cleaning catfish isn’t like cutting down other species. Maher’s restaurant was launched 20 years ago and it used to be a small restaurant. However, we expanded the restaurant, and visitors from different governorates come here to enjoy our catfish dish.

Fried catfish is an old Baghdadi popular dish. We come all the way from Karkh to Resafa only to have this dish. It is usually served along with pickles or rice.
