Storyline

Under the patronage of the Iraqi ministry of oil, the European Union (EU) and UNICEF, in collaboration with Eni, launched a project today in partnership with the Basra Governorate, which aims to provide access to improved water services. Paula Bulancea, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Iraq, said that the project ensures the provision of equitable, sustainable, and safe drinking water. The project, which also offers job opportunities, will provide water for 160 thousand children, 40 schools, and 21 health centers.

“We are here today to launch a project to supply Basra Governorate’s residents with safe drinking water. The project was launched in partnership with government agencies in Basra in addition to the European Union and Eni, which marks the first partnership with UNICEF. The aim is to deal with policies adopted in managing water sources. It also entails the provision of drinking water and ensuring its access to consumers, whether, for drinking or for domestic use and schools. The project is also concerned with providing job opportunities for youths by working with them directly, hand in hand in order to protect the environment, climate change, and water sources”

“Today we are celebrating the inauguration of the project, which will provide water to 160,000 children in Basra, 40 schools, and 21 health centers. It is a partnership between ENI, UNICEF, and the European Union, which provided 7 million dinars to UNICEF to implement this project. It was launched under the patronage of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, and it will be completed in the third quarter of this year.”

“Water projects in Basra Governorate that have been concluded by the governorate include a water desalination project and a pipeline that starts from northern Basra to Shatt Al-Arab district, with a length of 85 km. Today’s project was launched in coordination between the European Union, the Italian company Eni, and the local government. “

“This project aims at providing safe water to all the residents of Basra city within a span of three years. We are here to check on the project’s progress. We are also running larger projects. “Today’s project is part of Eni company’s commitments, the operator of the Zubair field, in coordination with the European Union and UNICEF. The aim is to rehabilitate the water pipeline network in Basra Governorate. We are also running laboratories and a training center while creating job opportunities up to a thousand jobs”
