Iraq – Muhammad Al-Halbousi re-elected for a second term as Speaker of the parliament

The MP Muhammad Rikan al-Halbousi has been re-elected for a second term as speaker of Iraq’s parliament, by an absolute majority, as he obtained 200 votes by parliamentarians while 14 were in favor of the active speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, and 15 votes were deemed invalid. Media reactions continued before the selection of the new parliament speaker, regarding the atmosphere of the chaotic beginning of the body’s first session of the fifth parliamentary session for the first year, which witnessed verbal altercations with the head, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, that led to the active speaker being taken to hospital. Media outlets have confirmed that the matter is settled for the three winning blocs, despite the differences in the Shiite house and the Kurdish house over the sovereign positions. The meeting was delayed by about five hours from its scheduled meeting at eleven in the morning.
