Syria – Euphrates River Recession Expands Sand Extraction Areas

48

Euphrates River water level drop and water recession in several areas led to an increase in areas suitable for exploration for Euphrates sand, which is considered one of the finest types of sand used in construction. Workers extract sand from the Euphrates River using heavy equipment, which pull the sand with the water from the river and then separate the sand from water from by special methods. Workers in sand quarries say that they had previously struggled a lot in extracting sand, especially in winter when the river use to flood, but they are now working easily to extract sand with the low water level and the expansion of suitable areas for exploration after water receded, but their suffering is now with Old machinery that need regular maintenance, and lack of fuel. This limits the extracted quantities, although the demand is very high for it, just like cement and iron, in the process of rebuilding the city.
