Taiwan – After banning exports, suffocating crisis afflicts fruit growers

For the second time this year, China‘s decision to ban the import of Taiwanese fruits, such; Sugar Apples, Wax Apple,s, etc., has caused a slump in products for some farmers who export more than 90% of their products and inflicted heavy economic losses on farmers, in addition to the recent increase in the agricultural area in Taiwan amid the absence of marketing methods, while the country’s fruit exports exceed one billion dollars. For his part, the Taiwanese Minister of Agriculture, Chen Chi-Chung, stated that the government will spend about 100 million Taiwan dollars ($ 3.60 million) to help the affected farmers, not only to increase local sales; but also exports to other markets such as Singapore and Malaysia. Taiwan, the subtropical island, is famous for its thriving fruit cultivation previously developed, and last year more than 90% of pineapple exports went to China, while the government asked Taiwanese companies to make wholesale purchases and search for alternative export markets. It’s noteworthy that Taiwan separated from China at the end of the civil war in 1949, and its economy is estimated at $390 billion.
