Mongolia – Soil and groundwater pollution contribute to the spread of diseases among children
A large number of children in Ulaanbaatar, the Mongolian capital, suffer from the spread of diseases among them, such as intestinal infections and diarrhea. Doctors and specialists attributed the spread of diseases among children to the pollution of groundwater resulting from the use of a large number of citizens to pit latrines that leak directly into the soil, causing 88% of the soil and groundwater with nitrates in the ger area in Ulaanbaatar, especially in the spring. Meanwhile, a group of volunteers launched an initiative called “Let’s change our toilets” aiming to reduce pit latrines in Ulaanbaatar and ger areas and paying the costs of their maintenance, as well as educating citizens to clean and maintain their latrines safe and clean for their children.
