Iraq – Debate in Iraq about the draft law of the Iraqi Federal Court

45

The Debate over the draft bill of the Federal Court, voted on paragraphs of it by the Iraqi parliament has increased in Iraq. The discussion is related to the importance of this court, which will be the highest judicial body in the country, specialized in adjudicating disputes between branches of the executive authority and between the executive and legislative branches. The court’s provisions apply to deciding on the constitutionality of laws. The majority of members of parliament in the Iraqi parliament are seeking to pass legal texts and an article demanding the inclusion of Islamic jurists in the 11-member court, in a way that allows them to vote on draft laws, which provoked the outrage of Iraqi activists and jurists over what they considered a legal innovation concerning the conduct of the judiciary in the country.
