Yemen – The suffering of fishermen in the province of Hajjah
Hajjah Governorate – Yemen 24/05/2019
A large number of fishermen in the province of Hajjah in north-west of Yemen suffer from harsh economic conditions as a result of the ongoing battles and destruction of their boats and fishing equipment by the Huthis. The fisherman “Mohammed Abkar” from the village of Jadaa in Maidi Directorate is one of these fishermen that works on his primitive wooden boat “Haneen”. As the boat is his only source of livelihood, Mohammed only earn 12 kilograms of fish, which makes his poor condition similar to hundreds of fishermen who have gotten their boats and fishing nets destroyed, not to mention the lack of ice and the need to walk long distance to obtain it.
