Iraq – Concerns about ending Iraq’s waiver over US sanctions on Iran
Baghdad-Iraq 25/04/2019
Concerns were raised by Iraqi officials, including members of the parliament, following the US administration’s announcement to end the US sanctions waivers granted for several countries, including Iraq, starting next month. Analysts believe that cutting off trade relations with Iran would have a dramatic negative impact on the Iraqi economy, since the Iraqi energy sector highly depends on Iran’s gas, considering that Iraq imports about 28 million cubic meters of gas on a daily basis to use it in generating electricity, and also imports 1,200 megawatts of electricity according to an agreement Iraq made with Iran eight years ago.
