Iraq – First female speaker of Kurdistan Region parliament

The Kurdistan Democratic Party MP Vala Fareed became the first female Speaker of Parliament after winning 64 votes. However, her position is temporary until an agreement with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is reached, as it will present its nominee to parliament as soon as its members return to the parliament sessions. This took place during the first session of parliament after over three months since announcing the results of the parliamentary election.
