Iraq – Basra is turning into an arena for religious and political assassinations

The assassination incidents that took place in the city of Basra in southern Iraq during the past few weeks, targeting a number of activists, most of them women, have been the object of anger and fear among citizens, especially those who participated in the recent popular protests in the city. The opinions of observers and experts varied on the causes of these assassinations and kidnappings. A group of them attributed these incidents during a dialogue seminar on the subject to religious motives, while others confirmed that the recent killings in the city were retaliatory actions against demonstrators and protesters who accused the government of corruption and burned official buildings and headquarters of the popular mobilization.
