Storyline:

A number of Iraqi military and security experts and political analysts discussed the fallout of the war in Ukraine on the region, mainly Iraq as well as the international stances toward the crisis.  They said the war in Ukraine triggered a hike in the prices of crude oil globally, to the benefit of Iraq’s revenues from oil.

In a seminar session held in Baghdad to discuss the war in Ukraine, the officials pointed to the negative repercussions of the crisis on food security in Iraq which, like many other countries in the region including Arab states, already relies on grain imports from Russia and Ukraine.

The attendees warned that the war Russia waged on Ukraine might spread farther to engage other global powers thus affecting the political status quo in Iraq, which is already unstable.

‘’One positive impact of the crisis is the hike in crude oil price. This further boosted the country’s stock market, the state’s budget, and treasury. On the flip side, however, the fallout of the crisis will negatively affect Iraq as it imports wheat and iron from Ukraine and legumes from Russia. Europe could also be affected for its gas needs, mainly Germany.’’

‘’Iraq’s politics and economy are always impacted by the various political tensions and instabilities in the world. Iraq never enjoyed full political stability which makes it prone to indirect tensions worldwide. International disputes of major powers also impact our economy which, like politics, has never been stable.’’

‘’ The impact of the war on Iraq will be similar to Arab states in the region. This is true because the Arab states, including Iraq, are reliant on Russia and Ukraine for their imports of grain, wheat, and corn. Egypt, for example, yesterday announced that their wheat reserve will only last for 5 months.’’
