Storyline

Chukar Birds wrestling is very popular in Ranya town, Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan, Iraq, and is held on Saturdays and Tuesdays in these months of the year.

These competitions attract amateur hunters in the region, and sometimes amateurs from outside Iraq participate too, where a large crowd gathers from inside and outside the city with cheers and shouts, waiting for the loser bird to escape and the winner to survive.

The owner of the winner bird can sell them at prices ranging from one to three thousand dollars.

  • (SOUNDBITE) Dara Bakr – One of the organizers of the birds wrestling:

“Participants from all Kurdish regions and cities in Kurdistan, as well as from Iranian cities attend such competitions. Sometimes we go to Iran to hold the match. Wrestling is not to win money, but rather a hobby and when a bird wins, it is sold at a high price.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Moin Zaidal – Participant from eastern Iran:

“I have been participating in these matches for 35 years. It is a hobby not a way to make money. Sometimes I feel sick, and when I participate in matches, I feel better. I came to Ranya town from eastern Iran to participate and meet with friends and relatives.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Qarman Mirza – Participant from the town

“The matches start in the fall season from November till mid-May. It is -the hobby of  people Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk, and Iran as well.”
