Iraq- Iraqi Minister of Agriculture: Food Insecurity Looms as Water Resources Recede
Receding water resources in Iraq poses a grave threat to food security, as wheat and barley production are among the hardest-hit crops amid dwindling rainfalls, according to the Iraqi Minister of Agriculture Muhammad al-Khafaji. However, the recent downpour and floods in North Iraq mollified such concerns. Al-Khafaji indicated that the ministry developed a long-term plan to support domestic agricultural production and tighten the grip over the borders. It is worth mentioning that Iraq enjoys an 80% self-sufficiency in the poultry industry
