Sri Lanka – Sri Lankan teachers go on strike for the 48th day demanding salary raise

49

For the 46th day in a row, teachers and school principals in Sri Lanka continue their strike against the failure to find a solution to the salary problem, despite the government imposing a complete lockdown due to Covid, as the authorities recently conducted negotiations with the teachers union to reach understandings, however, teachers claimed that the solution is not satisfactory to end the crisis. The General Secretary of Sri Lanka Teachers’ Union, Joseph Stalin, stated that the government tried to suppress the labor protests, but it could not implement anything, adding that the union would refrain from participating in the educational process until a radical solution is reached. The daily protests in various parts of Sri Lanka, organized by teachers’ unions and attracting large crowds, have raised fears of a resurgence of Covid in the country.
