People of Samarra, north of Baghdad, have expressed their increased concerns over the archaeological sites, such as the Great Mosque and the Scientific School, from the transfer of its ownership from the Sunni Endowment to its Shiite counterpart, which could herald a new popular tension with streets repercussions. Activists warned against tampering with the city’s historical heritage, emphasizing that they are about to take the issue internationally by appealing to the Arab League, UNESCO, and the United Nations to secure their rights to protect this cultural heritage.
