40

In Garmian in Iraqi Kurdistan, the deaf theater band known as Asterkan (stars) was the only mean through which its members expressed their emotions and exhibited their talents. The band was established in 2015 in Kalar city. In 2018, the old members decided to expand their membership by employing stage actors from the deaf community. Twelve new members joined, ageing between 14 to 18 years old. The founder of the band, Rahim Kareem illustrated that the theatre has a favourable psychological impact on deaf people, given the fact that through acting, they express themselves. Their moods and traits changed drastically especially when dealing with their families. However, with the outbreak of coronavirus, the band suspended acting. Currently, the band is preparing for performing some plays in upcoming art events
