Tunisia – Controversy over gender equality in inheritance
Tunisian Capital – Tunisia 17/3/2018
The issue of gender equality in inheritance is once again taking over the Tunisian street. Women’s associations are demanding the enactment of a law guaranteeing equal gender inheritance as a matter of urgency. The new constitution guarantees full equality between the both genders in terms of rights and duties. On the other hand, the religious clerics rejected this proposal in its entirety, as it contradicts the Qur’anic texts and Islamic law. It is noteworthy that this proposal was recently issued by the President of the Tunisian Republic, Beji Caid Essebsi, who stressed the need for legal review that would equal inheritance between men and women.
