Storyline:

Supporters of Sadrist movement leader, Muqtada al-Sadr, started today, Tuesday to withdraw from outside the parliament building in the Green Zone and squares in central Baghdad. This came after al-Sadr called on his supporters to withdraw immediately, in conjunction with the decision of the Joint Operations Command today to lift the curfew in all governorates in Iraq. The curfew was imposed yesterday, after clashes between protesters and security forces in the Green Zone in Baghdad, which resulted in the death of 30 people and injury of more than 500.

Life has returned to normal in capital Baghdad. Shops are open, traffic and mobility are back to normal, as citizens confirmed.

– Soundbite (Jassem Al-Ghurabi – Political analyst)

“I believe the situation has been stable today since 3 pm today, considering the political wrangling that lasted for more than a month between Coordination Framework and Sadrist movement, as well as last night, where many Iraqis were killed and injured. The security situation is currently good, after the speech Muqtada al-Sadr gave that led armed men and security forces to withdraw from the Green Zone. I believe Iraq is reaching new dialogues that will achieve security and economic stability in the future.”

– Soundbite (Abdullah Al-Kinani – Political analyst)

“Security situation has returned to normal and the crisis has eased, after Muqtada al-Sadr’s apology to the people, and Sadrist movement’s withdrawal from the Green Zone. There is new hope, where Coordination Framework should act on what Muqtada has proposed.”

– Soundbite (Hoda Ahmed – Iraqi citizen):

“After the curfew was lifted, life returned to normal. There is still concern however, as not all markets are open.”

– Soundbite (Hassan Ali – Iraqi citizen):

“Life has returned to normal. Karrada area is close to the Green Zone, and yesterday there was shooting and shelling. Thankfully, today everything is back to normal.”
