Storyline:

Intensified fighting between the Israeli military and Palestinian Islamic Jihad puts pressure on Hamas to join the battle. At the same time, Gaza’s hospitals brace for crippling of medical services in the embattled enclave.

Israeli shelling continues in several areas in Gaza for the second day in a row, as the Israeli air force bombed residential buildings in Ajlin in central Gaza.

Tel Aviv’s military claimed it struck some 30 Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip overnight. Still, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told A24 that Israel was targeting innocent civilians.

Barhoum indicated his organization was now moving toward a coordinated response alongside other factions, including Islamic Jihad, which has been considered a rival for the dominant force in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza’s largest hospital, is warning that the continued blockade and failure to provide medical supplies, puts caretakers in a position where they are at real risk of being unable to treat the injured.

– Soundbite (Talal Abu Zarifa – Member of the Political Bureau of Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine):

“The aggression of the Israeli occupation against our people is a war crime. Israeli strikes on residential buildings, children, women, youth and resistance leaders, are violations of international and humanitarian laws. In which case, we have to stand up and defend the people of Palestine. Israel is the one who started the aggression, but will not be the one to stop it.”

– Soundbite (Fawzi Barhoum – Hamas spokesman):

“Israel continues its aggression against Gaza, targeting innocent people, civilians and residential buildings, which confirms premeditated intention by Israel to continuously commit crimes against Gaza and Palestinians. Palestinian resistance, along with all its factions and wings, are still in high-level coordination of the appropriate approach to respond to this aggression and stop it.”

– Soundbite (Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya – Director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex)

“So far, the Ministry of Health has reported 11 deaths and 79 injuries across hospitals in Gaza. Among the injured are many children, women and elderly. There are many injured in need of specialized treatment but there is shortage in medical supplies and medicines, 40% of the needed supplies are unavailable. If the aggression continues, along with the blockade on Gaza and failure to provide needed medical supplies, we will be at real risk of being unable to treat the injured. In addition to that, there is a major electricity issue, the power station will turn off the third generator, which will affect the electricity supply to hospitals.”
