Many Jordanian journalists and activists staged a sit-in outside Al Jazeera’s office in Amman, to condemn the killing of Palestinian journalist and Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Aqleh.

The journalists raised pictures of the Abu Aqleh, and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

The Abu Aqleh’s murder caused widespread outrage locally and internationally, while the director of Al Jazeera’s office in Jordan, Hassan Al-Shobaki, expressed his deep sadness at the loss of a voice that reached every home in Palestine and overseas.

Shot list:

  • Soundbite (Hassan Al-Shobaki – Director of Al-Jazeera office in Amman):

“We, Arabs, the media, and the Palestinian and Arab women’s movement, in Palestine and Jordan, have lost Shireen Abu Aqleh. She has reached every house and everyone is sore for what happened.”

  • Soundbite (Loay Obeidat – Lawyer):

“All over the world, in wars and areas of clashes, it is known that journalists and media professionals enjoy protection and immunity. International agreements and covenants guarantee them immunity and protection in these locations.”

  • Soundbite (Rifaat Badr – Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media):

“Shireen Abu Aqleh has worked for a quarter of a century to convey the true picture of what the Palestinian people are suffering. She raised the Palestinian voice globally. Everyone watches Al Jazeera and her well-crafted field reports. She entered every home in Palestine, to witness the suffering and then convey it to every home in the world.”

  • Soundbite (Nisreen Abu Salha – Media Person):

“What happened today is crystal clear that a sniper targeted her. It is clear that she was not killed by mistake, or as part of clashes. The camera was on after the martyrdom of Shireen to convey the image as it is, for all people and all the world.”
