Storyline:

Five months after the Iraqi parliamentary elections, the Iraqi political forces and people are awaiting the presidential election session. Parliaments again failed to nominate a candidate due to the postponement of the session that was scheduled for last month, as many political parties boycotted the session. This led to a dispute over the election of the President of the Republic or later the selection of the Prime Minister-designate. Forty candidates are vying for the presidency in a parliamentary session scheduled for Saturday. Meanwhile, the political blocs continued their efforts to gain more support from independents for their candidates.

Soundbite (Adnan Al-Sarraj – President of the Iraqi Center for Development of Media):

“We are awaiting the results of the efforts of the Sadrist movement and the coordination framework to gain support from the independents to gain 220 votes to win the Saturday elections. The dispute between the Sadrist movement and the coordination framework must be resolved.”

Soundbite (Jassim Al-Ghurabi – writer and political analyst):

“I think the competition between the Sadrist movement and the coordination framework will be high. I expect that a president of the republic will not be elected in the first round.”
