The ancient gates of the Medina of Tunis (medina quarter of Tunis) reflect a rich history of the country. Despite the fact that a lot of these gates no longer exist, they are held in high esteem among Tunisians. These gates distinguish many cities in Tunisia. Each of these distinctive gates narrates a special era. However, these anecdotes are unknown to many. Historians illustrated that the names of these gates were derived from the area they lead to; Bab el Bhar ( the gate of the sea) overlooks the sea. Bab El Khadra (the green gate) was also given its name because it leads to the green gardens.
