The majority of people in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor province in eastern Syria resorted to sesame cultivation, as planting it has spread significantly in the past years since the outbreak of the crisis in Syria, because of its ease of cultivation and the low material costs needed to plant sesame, especially in light of the high prices of fertilizers and medicines as well as the costs of pumping water from the Euphrates River towards agricultural lands of other crops, such as cotton, wheat, and others, sesame is considered to be the only source of livelihood for the majority of the region’s population as well as sheep herding.
