Philippines: Dozens protest outside the Canadian Embassy to demand re-export of illegal garbage shipments

Dozens of Filipinos led by the EcoWaste Coalition gathered outside the Canadian Embassy in Makati City to demand Canada to respect the ultimatum set by the President Rodrigo Duterte, who has threatened to go to war with Canada if the country does not reclaim a series of illegal garbage shipments, wrongly declared plastics for recycling, that were sent to the Philippines from Canada in 2013-2014. The protestors also called Canada to abide by the Basel Convention, which is designed to prevent the transfer of hazardous waste from developed to less developed countries, stressing the need for the Canadian government to develop a well thought out plan and a specific date to re-export the waste.
