The Basra police chief, lieutenant general Rashid Flaih declared the continuing of the security crackdown on drug dealers in the city through the joint efforts of all security forces in the governorate in order to fight against drugs and prevent smuggling them into the country from Iran. The police chief mentioned that most of the drugs that have infested the governorate are a result of Iran being unable to control the border with Iraq. He added that putting a stop to drug dealers should be the mission of both countries. Officials in Basra recently confirmed the need for the government to take stronger measures in preventing the drug scourge in the country by securing the borders through the border guard and naval force in Basra governorate. It is mentioned that the High Commissioner for Human Rights released a statement saying that Iraq has become a “popular market” for selling and using drugs, particularly among young men and women, after it was only a mere pathway for transporting these poisonous substances.
